Living Next Door to the Death House
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (March, 2003)
Average review score:

Even-handed and helpfulI have just finished Living Next Door to the Death House and really appreciated the good writing. The book was excellent! It has been very helpful to me in my work as a Methodist pastor; during Advent I did a series of lectures on "tough issues" and thought that Homosexuality or separation of Church and State/Prayer in our schools would be the most passionate subjects, but I was amazed in that the Death Penalty was, by far, the most passionate and difficult for many. I have learned that I can talk about why I am against the Death Penalty, but I have not had a loved one murdered...... the stories I have heard from my members have humbled me and I continue to learn that this whole subject is very complex. This book takes so many of the sides and I found it to be very helpful. I will suggest it to my people here that are struggling. Again, I commend the Owenses for their excellent book.

MacClintonlet: William Shakespeare Covers the Clinton, Lewinsky, Starr Scandal
Published in Paperback by Washington Oaks Publishing (28 February, 1999)
Average review score:

Humanistic political satire, an oxymoron?I am a big fan of political satire, particularly P. J. O'Rourke, so I was anxious to read this book. It has the expected humor and cynicism, but it also has a depth of human understanding that is very rare in satire. When I read the monologues of Bill, Hillary, Chelsea, Al Gore, and Monica (not their real names according to Shakespeare), I was entralled. I found myself sympathizing with them and thinking R. Louis is right on target. I'm SURE this is the way the real people involved feel about their public ordeal. This book has a great combination of current events, humor, witty Shakespearean prose, and empathy for characters most people don't feel sorry for anymore. Republicans and Democrats alike will enjoy it. Signed, A Moderate Democrat

Marbury V. Madison and Judicial Review
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Kansas (September, 1991)
Average review score:

Modern Judicial Review?Clinton's study of the origins of judicial review is very interesting despite some major weaknesses. His attempt to understand what the Framers of the Constitution believed judicial review to be would be much stronger with more detail to the controversies raging within states just after ratification about judicial review. This is because he depends heavily upon his assertion that Marbury was consistent with the generally understood meaning of judicial review that the Framers shared. If there was no generally understood meaning about judicial review, then his hypothesis suffers a major blow.

Easy access to the National Historic LandmarksOrganized by state and then by county, this book offers an easy and quick way to find out about the properties that have been defined as our national landmarks. The pithy descriptions of each property are clever, articulate, and avoid formula writing, keeping the reader moving from one to another of the various entries. In addition to the index by property name, there is a general index by subject matter, making it easy to find properties related by subject, regardless of location.

No More Sad Refrains : The Life and Times of Sandy Denny
Published in Paperback by Helter Skelter Publishing (September, 2002)
Average review score:

impressive biographyI hadn't heard any of Sandy Denny's music until 1992, when a friend of mine gave me a cassette with a couple of her tracks on it. I listened to it on a long car journey, when it was the only tape I had with me, so I heard it several times then. I was totally fascinated by her music and voice and started collecting her music. Of course you then also want to find out something about the singer and initially all the info I had was from album liner notes. I soon learnt that she'd died at an early age but the circumstances leading up to that tragic event were never satisfactoraly explained. Later I bought a book on Fairport Convention (Meet On The Ledge) and even though that did provide a chronology of her career with FC, it didn't really shed more light on Sandy as a person.
No More Sad Refrains does. It is clear that the author is a big fan of her music, but he manages to keep the distance required to paint an objective picture of someone who was very talented, but certainly no saint as some of the album liner notes would have you believe. The book also manages to put a lot of her lyrics in perspective with things going on in her life, and has through that enriched my listening to her music.
Although of course the excesses of rock and roll and life on the road are described here, it is always done in a very objective way and never with the sensationalism that you find in many other rock biographies. An excellent and impressive biography.

No Surprises: Two Decades of Clinton-Watching
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (May, 1996)
Average review score:

Author brings unique perspective, uncanny analysis to bearI have read several books about Bill Clinton. This one is unique, and in that much of it is pre-presidential, provides uncanny insight into the range of events surrounding Clinton today. Author is a recognized, awarded civil rights writer, with convictions which defy partisan affiliations or stereotyped ideology. There were several times when things he had written made me laugh out loud. Many times he speaks with great conviction, always hopeful for Clinton's best, ready to forgive, and then the next disappointment. I've not seen another Clinton book like it, and I've read at least 30. Greenberg even correctly analyzes the problem that Republicans have had against Clinton, and the misperception that has led their strategy astray. Because the book uses as source material, articles that he had written as a journalist, you get that perspective that comes as the events take place. It's rewarding to read the author's interpretations of those events without knowledge of what would happen in the years ahead, and at times uncanny how on target his read of an event's significance was, with regard to future behavior. He couldn't care less about most of the sexual stuff - he's more interested in greater issues. A must read for all with an interest in Clinton.

Not So!: Popular Myths About America from Columbus to Clinton
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (September, 1995)
Average review score:

Interesting, eye-opening bookThis is a well-written book that should be read by anyone with a desire to go beyond the many myths Americans learn while in grade school. I particularly found interesting chapters 1, 28, and 39, although all of the chapters are enlightening. This book is just as interesting as Loewen's Lies My Teacher Told Me.
